David Hockney, born in 1937, is an English artist, who is now based in California. David Hockney was an important contributor to the British Pop Art scene of the 1960's. David Hockney is considered by many to be one of the most influential modern artists of our times.

David Hockney was born in Bradford and attended the Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. While still at the Royal College of Art, David Hockney became associated with pop art, but his early works also display expressionist tendences. In 1963 David Hockney visited New York, where he encountered Andy Warhol amongst others. A trip to California, where he eventually settled, inspired Hockney to make a series of acrylic/oil paintings of swimming pools in Los Angeles. These swimming pool themed paintings are executed in a realistic style and use vibrant colours. Hockney created prints, portraits of friends, and stage designs for the Royal Court Theatre, Glyndebourne, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. David Hockney also experiments with photography, or more precisely, photocollaging. Using a selection of polaroid images or photolab-prints of a single subject, David Hockney arranges a patchwork of photos to make a composite image. Because these photos are taken from different perspectives, and at slightly different times of the day, the resulting work recalls cubism.
